The infamous Woodstock Music and Art Fair, commonly referred to as Woodstock, was a music festival held during August 15–18, 1969, on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York, United States some 40 miles (65 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock. Billed as "an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music" and alternatively referred to as the Woodstock Rock Festival, it attracted more than 400,000 attendees.
It was big but on July 23rd 1973 an estimated 600,000 (it continues to be a Guinness Book of Records entry) assembled at Watkins Glen Raceway in upstate New York for a one-day festival of music that featured just three bands:
The Allman Brothers
The Grateful Dead and
The Band.
The festival called ‘The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen included two 5hour sets from The Grateful Dead; a 3 hour set from the Allman Brothers and a 2 hour set from The Band followed by a 90 minute jam involving all three bands playing improvisations of Johnny B Good and Not Fade Away.
The Grateful Dead’s lead, Jerry Garcia, once said: “You don’t want to be considered just the best of the best; you want to be the only ones that do what you do.”
Great advice indeed and typical of the wisdoms found in Marketing Lessons from The Grateful Dead. If you only every buy one marketing text book let it be this one.
